Super Mario Bros. is a side-scrolling plat-former developed and published by Nintendo in 1985. In the game the player controls the character Mario as he traverses the mushroom kingdom to save Princess Toadstool, later known as Peach, from the clutches of Bowser. The player will traverse each stage avoiding enemies and hazards as well as finding power ups to help them through the level.
Super Mario Bros. is a plat-former, therefore most of the game-play focuses on jumping past pits, hazards, and enemies. A main thing for a plat-former to have for me is precise controls to help with jumps, and Super Mari Bros does this extremely well. Mario controls extremely well and the preciseness of the controls helps with the platforming. Super Mario Bros has more to it than just platforming though, it has what are known as power ups. These power-ups help the player by providing a special ability depending on the power-up, mushroom makes Mario big, Fire flower gives Mario fireballs. Adding power-ups not only makes the game easier it also adds another layer of game-play and strategy through the levels. These power ups will also help with the many enemies you will encounter in the game. The enemies that attempt to block your path very in both abilities and design. From mushroom looking enemies, goombas, to bouncing squid, Bloopers, there are a wide arrange to face off against. Some, like the Koopa, can even be used after jumping on them.
The Design of Super Mario Bros is extremely well done from the level design to the sound design. The way that Super Mario Bro looks gives it a very charming appeal. World 1’s background at surface value is very minimal but is still colorful and pleasing to look at. The music that plays over the levels also are great when paired with each other. You have a catchy tune playing as you run through a basic level, then you have a more ominous tense theme over Bowser’s castle, each areas fits perfectly and are extremely catchy. As you play through the levels you can also discover hidden areas through pipes or vines that appear from certain blocks. These can be used as shortcuts and provide a decent amount of coins, rewarding those who find it.
Super Mario Bros. even after all nearly forty years is still a joy to play. Controls are still tight and responsive providing fun game-play. The visual style is made in a way to make it still be visually pleasing, and the soundtrack of the game is filled with catchy songs that will get stuck in your head. Eve after all these years Super Mario Bros. is still one of the greatest platformers developed.
